OUTSIDE THE BLITZ CLUB image signed by Rusty Egan
A moment from the pavement that feels like a manifesto: Visage gathered outside the Blitz, under that huge neon sign — part band portrait, part scene roll-call. Photographed by Sheila Rock, it captures the New Romantic world at street level: sharp silhouettes, hard stares, styled like a future that’s already arrived.
Rock has spoken about taking this picture at the start of the 80s, choosing the Blitz sign as the graphic backdrop, and placing Steve Strange front and centre — because the whole point of Blitz was transformation: if you didn’t look good, you didn’t get in. It’s exactly the kind of photograph that turns a club night into cultural evidence.
This image also carries museum-level provenance. The Design Museum’s major exhibition “Blitz: the club that shaped the 80s” (20 September 2025 – 29 March 2026) frames Blitz as design history — a short-lived Tuesday night that reshaped 80s fashion, music, graphics and identity. The exhibition draws together 250+ items including photography and rare film footage, and Sheila Rock’s “Outside the Blitz club” image is used as a key visual for the show.
